Moisture Control is Key to Prevent Mold
12/2/2020 (Permalink)
Mold can grow on virtually any type of substance as long as moisture, water, oxygen, and an organic source are present. They can gradually damage building materials and furnishings if left unchecked and cause structural damage to a wood-framed building, weakening floors and walls.
Mold needs moisture to grow, so it’s important to prevent excess moisture. Moisture problems in buildings can be linked to leaky pipes, roof damage, landscaping or gutters that direct water into or under a building, or an unvented combustion appliance. Even delayed, improper or insufficient maintenance of HVAC systems can result in elevated humidity levels inside a building.
Moisture control is the key to control mold, so any initial water infiltration should be stopped and cleaned promptly. A quick response (within 24-48 hours), thorough clean-up, and removal of damaged materials prevent and limit mold growth. Simply killing the mold is not enough. Since the chemicals and proteins are present even in dead mold, it’s essential that the mold be removed.
