9/21/2024 (Permalink)

Flooded Daffodil When spring showers start flooding areas on your property, SERVPRO of Victor/Canandaigua is Here to Help®.

Spring is a season of renewal and growth, but it also brings the risk of flooding due to melting snow and heavy rain. Flooding can cause significant damage to your home or business, leading to costly repairs and disruption.

Knowing how to handle spring flooding effectively is crucial for minimizing damage and ensuring a swift recovery. Here’s what you need to know about dealing with water damage caused by spring flooding.

Immediate Actions to Take

When faced with spring flooding, it’s essential to act quickly to mitigate damage and ensure safety. First, prioritize safety by turning off the electricity to affected areas to avoid the risk of electric shock. If the water level is high, avoid entering the premises until it is safe to do so. Once you can safely access the property, remove any valuable items and move them to a dry location.

Begin by removing standing water using a wet vacuum or pump if available. If you lack the necessary equipment or experience, it’s wise to contact a professional water damage restoration service like SERVPRO of Victor/Canandaigua to handle the extraction and prevent further damage.

Assessing and Addressing Damage

After addressing immediate concerns, assess the extent of the damage to your home or business. Inspect walls, floors, and ceilings for signs of water infiltration and damage. Water can seep into structural elements and materials, leading to potential mold growth and structural issues if not addressed promptly. Remove and discard any water-damaged materials, such as insulation, drywall, and carpeting, as they can harbor mold and bacteria.

Ensure that the area is thoroughly dried out using dehumidifiers and fans. Proper drying is crucial to prevent secondary damage and the growth of mold and mildew. Professional water damage restoration experts can provide comprehensive assessments and use advanced drying techniques to restore your property effectively.

Preventing Future Flooding

Preventing future flooding is key to safeguarding your property from recurring damage. Start by evaluating the drainage around your home or business. Ensure that gutters and downspouts are clean and functioning properly to direct water away from the building. Consider installing sump pumps or flood barriers to manage excess water during heavy rains. Additionally, inspect the foundation for any cracks or gaps that could allow water to seep in.

Sealing these openings can help prevent water from entering your property during future storms. It’s also a good idea to create a flood preparedness plan, including emergency contacts and steps to take in case of severe weather. Being proactive can help minimize the impact of future flooding events.

Spring flooding can be a stressful and challenging situation, but taking prompt and effective action can help you manage the damage and protect your property. If you experience flooding and need expert assistance, SERVPRO of Victor/Canandaigua is Here to Help®.

Contact SERVPRO of Victor/Canandaigua today for professional assistance and ensure that your home or business is restored to its pre-flood condition. Your safety and peace of mind are our top priorities.

Top Ways to Stay Dry During a Flood | SERVPRO of Victor/Canandaigua

6/27/2024 (Permalink)

Flooded Neighborhood Street Experienced flood damage? SERVPRO of Victor/Canandaigua is "Here to Help" with all of your cleanup and restoration needs.

We experience all kinds of weather patterns here in upstate New York, and most of them include some type of precipitation. Heavy rain in the spring and summer accompanies thunderstorms, while the winter season gives way to extremely snowy conditions that can leave us all hunkered down in our houses.

Whenever a significant amount of water is present, the risk of flash flooding conditions increases. While the specific flood zones can’t always be predicted, you can prepare for the possibility as soon as the watch or warning is issued so you can stay dry.

Preparing Outside the Home

Floodwater will affect the exterior of your home first as it starts to flow onto your property, so it’s best to start outside. Be sure your gutters and downspouts are clear and ready to pull water off your roof and away from your home. Get your car inside the garage, and start tidying up your yard.

Tie down anything that could potentially be swept away by fast-moving water, like patio furniture or grills. If you have the ability to get utilities and service equipment off the ground, take the time to raise and anchor equipment like water meters, heat pumps or HVAC equipment.

Preparing Inside the Home

Once your property is ready to weather the storm, head inside and start getting your lowest levels ready. Pull any valuable possessions or soft materials out of your basement or lowest level and store them higher up for the time being. If you have the time, check your foundation for any cracks or gaps that you can seal before the rain starts to fall.

Check your sump pump to ensure it is working, and make sure any drains that you have in your floor are clear and ready to work just in case. If water does start flowing into your home, don’t panic!

Simply stay above the water line and take pictures as the situation develops. This can help ensure a smooth insurance claims process during your restoration. After the water stops flowing in, give us a call.

Common Locations for a Water Leak | SERVPRO of Victor/Canandaigua

12/27/2023 (Permalink)

Our homes are constantly using water, running water or transferring water throughout each room in our homes to help us accomplish tasks and to keep our homes dry. While our home’s water systems are typically really reliable on a daily basis, all it takes is a single malfunction or incident for a huge water disaster to occur.

If you are going about your day and discover a suspicious water spot or an obvious leak, locating the source is crucial for controlling the situation.

Our SERVPRO of Victor/Canandaigua team explains more about where the most common locations are for water leaks so you can take control faster and prevent further damage.

Exterior Doors or Old Windows

Storms can cause all kinds of issues for your home, especially when heavy rain is present. Any part of your home that has direct access to the outside has the potential to leak during a storm. Exterior doors can hang crooked, or door frames can even sag due to structural aging, leaving gaps or cracks behind.

Windows are also a common culprit. Deteriorating caulk lines or general wear and tear over the years can cause hairline cracks to occur around the window frames. Even the tiniest of gaps can invite water into your home that can leak and seep into your drywall and under your floors.

Compromised Roofs

We rely on our roofs to keep us dry and cozy when the rain comes pouring down. Since they are the first line of defense, they put up with a lot when it comes to Mother Nature and the elements!

While roofing materials are really sturdy and built to withstand strong storms, any sort of damage can eventually cause significant water issues. A single missing or broken shingle or an eave that has a small gap in it can leak water into your attic that can affect the rest of your home.

Checking your roof for damage after every storm can help you identify issues as they come up. Of course, obvious damage like a tree falling on your roof can be easy to spot, but smaller damage or emerging issues will require a ladder and an eye trained for detail.

The Threat of Appliances

One of the most common reasons for home damage is not even due to Mother Nature! Any appliance in your home that relies on water to function can leak at any point. Your dishwashers, washing machines and even the ice maker in your fridge can cause troubles.

Check these appliances by running your hand along the edges before every use to check for moisture, and try to pull them away from the wall on occasion to look for water spots or signs of mold.

Suffering water damage can be incredibly frustrating, but we are here to help! Our team will dry up the excess water, address repairs and ensure your entire affected area is clean, sanitized and odor-free.

Contact us right away if you suffer a water disaster. SERVPRO of Victor/Canandaigua is here 24/7.

3 Ways to Avoid Water Damage in Your Home | SERVPRO of Victor/Canandaigua

9/22/2023 (Permalink)

Worried woman mopping up water from a burst pipe with sponge Need help restoring your space after water damage? Call SERVPRO of Victor/Canandaigua for a fast response!

Water damage can occur in one singular, destructive event, or it can happen slowly over a longer period of time. In any case, discovering water damage after any type of water leak can be really frustrating.

We don’t want you to have to suffer any kind of water damage in your home! By knowing what to look for and the places to check around your home, you can prevent extensive damage from occurring.

Maintain Your Appliances

If you have lived in your home for a while, chances are that you have experienced at least one appliance malfunction during your years as a homeowner. We all rely heavily on our appliances, so they get put to work often!

Our dishwashers, washing machines and even water heaters have big jobs to do day in and day out, and if they are not taken care of on a regular basis, it can result in a serious malfunction.

Stay current on any routine maintenance like cleaning or servicing, and inspect each appliance before using them to check for drips, cracks or any other signs of wear and tear. You should also consider replacing any aging appliances as older equipment tends to get more unreliable as the years pass.

Keep Your Roof Tidy

Water damage can also occur due to Mother Nature! Heavy rain can easily overwhelm a roof that leaks or cracks, and water can get into your attic and leak down your walls.

Undetected roof damage can cause your entire home to become compromised with water damage and mold growth. Inspect your roof often and address issues quickly.

You should also be cleaning out your gutter system before each storm. Clogged gutters can force water to back up onto your roof, which can lead to water pouring over the sides of your home and directly down onto your foundation. This can lead to groundwater seeping down and into your basement or lowest level.

Understand Where Water Flows in Your Home

Water pipes and valves are all over the place in our homes, but knowing exactly where each line leads to and how to shut off each water valve can help you put a stop to any water issues immediately. Take the time to go through your utility room and learn how each system works.

You should also be monitoring your water bill! If you open up your bill and are shocked at how much money you owe, it might be due to a water leak happening somewhere in your home.

A simple drip from a cracked pipe can lead to gallons of water being lost a day, which can quickly add up the longer it is left unaddressed.

Water damage can happen quickly. Call SERVPRO of Victor/Canandaigua right away for a fast and efficient restoration.

Ways Your Home Can Flood | SERVPRO of Victor/Canandaigua

9/22/2023 (Permalink)

Many uprooted trees and pile of debris on dangerous part of landslip river/stream section after flooding by heavy rains of Ha You've got more to worry about than restoring your home after a flood. Let SERVPRO of Victor/Canandaigua help you focus on what matters most.

We need water to live and thrive and so do our homes and properties! Water is essential for life, but it is also necessary for us to have at our fingertips when we need to get tasks done around the house. Cooking, cleaning, taking a shower and even making ice to chill our drinks requires water.

However, water can also be a huge nuisance when it shows up where it shouldn’t in your home.

Flood situations are often unexpected and can create a watery mess in a short amount of time. We explain the top three ways your home can flood below.

The Impact of Mother Nature

We know how much it can rain here in upstate New York! Quickly moving storms can roll into town and bring strong wind and heavy rain.

If your home’s gutter system is clogged or you struggle with drainage issues on your property, you could quickly be dealing with serious water issues in your home. Water can seep down into your foundation and start to leak through your walls, leaving your basement flooded.

We can also experience flooding issues when the snow starts to melt in the springtime. If the temperatures rise too quickly after a particularly snowy season, the melted snow can flood your home and leave you with significant damage.

An Appliance Leak

All homeowners probably have at least one story of their appliances malfunctioning. While some may be minor issues, any appliance that deals with water can leak and cause a big mess.

Appliances like your dishwasher, washing machine and even water heater have the potential to malfunction at any point and can lead to a flooded kitchen or utility room.

Checking these appliances regularly for signs of wear and tear or other maintenance issues can help you identify problems as they arise. It is also a good idea to replace aging appliances as you are able, since older equipment can become more unreliable the older it gets.

Busted Pipes

There is water flowing behind our walls and under our floors constantly. While we may not think about it on a daily basis as we turn on taps or run a warm bath for our kids at night, a single crack or leak along a water line can lead to extensive damage.

If a pipe bursts in a dramatic fashion, you will probably become alerted to the issue right away and you can address the flooded area quickly. A tiny crack that drips for a long time behind your walls can also lead to floods, though that happens slowly over a longer period of time.

In any case, recovering from a flood should happen quickly to avoid long-term structural issues and mold growth. Our team is here to help you overcome flood damage 24/7!

We can handle any flood damage you encounter. Call SERVPRO of Victor/Canandaigua right away!

7ft of Water is WHERE!?

5/19/2022 (Permalink)

Water Line The water was so high in this basement that it was "kissing" the rafters overhead!

A burst water supply line coupled with a sump pump failure is a recipe for A LOT of water. Over 7ft of water, to be exact.  When SERVPRO of Victor/Canandaigua responded to this home, there was so much water that the fire department had to get involved.  Once it was pumped out, the real drying process began.

The water line was so high on the block wall (check out the picture!) that our technicians had to stand on a step-ladder to measure it.  As you can imagine, everything in the basement was affected including shelving, boxes of contents, the HVAC unit, and the hot water tank.  There was over $15,000 worth of electrical work that had to be done to get power restored to the home.

Between contents, structural drying, utility work, and permitting - the price tag on this loss was very high.  Luckily for this home owner, SERVPRO of Victor/Canandaigua was there to get the water out of the basement, and drying things out in a timely manner!

Ways to Prevent Water Damage

12/5/2020 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Victor/Canandaigua specializes in the cleanup and remediation of water damage.

So, as you might expect, we’ve seen some of the worst possible water damage, from burst water heaters to ruptured pipes to actual flooding.

What’s remarkable about many cases of water damage is that, often, the damage could have been prevented with proper maintenance. This is something that many home and business owners simply do not know, which is why we’re dedicating this week’s blog post to the basic maintenance you can do to prevent water damage to your home or commercial building.

[Note: Please keep in mind that these tips are not provided as guarantees against water damage, and every property is going to differ when it comes to maintenance best practices.]

#1: Disconnect garden hoses, especially during the Fall and winter months.

We see this a lot: when hoses are left attached to a water source, the standing water within them can often freeze. When this happens, the freezing water expands, and the ice blockage travels inside the building, sometimes causing pipe bursts and subsequent water damage to the property.

This can happen even when the interior temperature of the building is significantly higher than the outside temperature. As a general rule, disconnect all hoses from their spigots when they’re not in use.

#2: Perform quarterly inspections of all water-using appliances.

Every few months, make it a point to inspect the operational condition of the appliances in your home or office. Pay extra attention to the connections between the appliance and the water supply, looking for leaks, corrosion, or loose fittings.

If your dishwasher, water heater, clothes washer, or other water-using appliance is in need of repair or replacement, doing so sooner than later can help protect you from costly water damage down the line.

#3: Consider installing water detection devices.

Small, battery-powered devices that detect moisture can be installed near water heaters, toilets, and other appliances. They will emit an alarm when moisture levels reach a certain threshold, giving you the opportunity to get ahead of leaks and overflows before they cause serious damage.

Installing these devices may be overkill for smaller homes, but for those with numerous water-carrying appliances, they can offer much-needed peace of mind.

#4: Unblock gutters, downspouts, and other external water routing hardware.

It’s tempting to let debris-filled gutters go unattended for months or even years. However, doing so could be setting you up for water damage.

When the water routing system on your roof isn’t functioning effectively, spillover can wreak havoc on the ground below. Standing water begins to accumulate, and before long, water intrusion starts taking its toll.

Also, blocked gutters can cause water to collect on the roof. This pooling can freeze in the colder months, causing expansion that can burst gutters and downspouts, causing potentially thousands in damage.

To address this, inspect your gutters, downspouts and other water runoff routing hardware for signs of blockages, and clear them away on a regular basis.

#5: Take a water pressure reading.

Most residential and commercial buildings have adequate water pressure regulation, but this isn’t always the case.

Having exceptionally high water pressure puts a lot of strain on the pipes and valves that are integral to the water transmission system within your home or commercial building. This strain can cause leaking and bursting without any warning whatsoever.

To take a water pressure reading, buy a water pressure gauge at your local hardware store, install it onto an external water spigot, and then turn the water on to maximum flow. If the water pressure reading exceeds 100 PSI, you’re going to want to install a water pressure regulator (also available at most hardware stores).

#6: Keep tabs on your water use by checking your bill for spikes.

If your home or commercial building uses a ‘normal’ amount of water most months and then, suddenly, you notice your water bill spike, there could be a leak somewhere.

Surprise water leaks can be insidious, not to mention very costly. Not only are you paying for the wasted water, but it’s possible the water being wasted is also causing damage to the building. If you suspect this is happening, put on your detective hat and try to get to the source of the mystery water leak.

Is the Damage Already Done? Contact SERVPRO.

If your home or commercial building has already been marred by water damage, then it’s time to take action to remediate it. That’s why your local SERVPRO is available, 24 hours a day, to assess water damage and take the necessary steps to repair it.

Classification of Water Damage in your Home

12/4/2020 (Permalink)

In this post, we will be explaining some of the basics of water damage and how it can affect your home and health. Water damage is the leading culprit when it comes to property damage and restoration service needs.

Now, this actually surprises a lot of folks, when they hear water damage they usually imagine a flood from a nearby river, a natural disaster, etc. While events as such do occur, there are more common ways for water damage to affect your home, including:

  • appliance leaks from your fridge, ice machine, washing machines, etc.
  • toilet overflows
  • sinks and bath/shower overflows or left running without attendance
  • broken/leaky water pipes within walls and ceilings
  • drainage issues around the property
  • roof leaks and compromised exterior
  • rain/wind storms

As you can see, water damage can originate from either internal or external sources and once it gets into your home it is important to know what kind of water you are dealing with.

What do we mean by what kind of water? Well in the restoration industry we recognize water in THREE different categories:

  • CATEGORY 1 – Also referred to as “Clean Water”, this means that the water originated from a sanitary source and does not generally pose a risk to our health.
  • CATEGORY 2 – This could also be referred to as “Grey Water”, meaning it contains some contamination and would not be sanitary enough for human consumption, posing a health risk if ingested.
  • CATEGORY 3 – Commonly known as “Black Water”, this is water that is grossly contaminated and could contain disease-causing organisms, pathogens, and other harmful materials.

Now you know the 3 different categories of water and how it can enter into your home. Each of these different categories of water damage comes with their own do's and don'ts on how to deal with them. Restoration professionals like SERVPRO of Victor/Canandaigua have advanced training and expertise, not to mention a tremendous amount of hands-on experience to handle any water damage emergency

Moisture Control is Key to Prevent Mold

12/2/2020 (Permalink)

Mold can grow on virtually any type of substance as long as moisture, water, oxygen, and an organic source are present. They can gradually damage building materials and furnishings if left unchecked and cause structural damage to a wood-framed building, weakening floors and walls.

Mold needs moisture to grow, so it’s important to prevent excess moisture. Moisture problems in buildings can be linked to leaky pipes, roof damage, landscaping or gutters that direct water into or under a building, or an unvented combustion appliance. Even delayed, improper or insufficient maintenance of HVAC systems can result in elevated humidity levels inside a building.

Moisture control is the key to control mold, so any initial water infiltration should be stopped and cleaned promptly. A quick response (within 24-48 hours), thorough clean-up, and removal of damaged materials prevent and limit mold growth. Simply killing the mold is not enough. Since the chemicals and proteins are present even in dead mold, it’s essential that the mold be removed.

Luckily, SERVPRO of Victor/Canandaigua is your trusted and certified mold remediation specialist! Give us a call for a free estimate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week! (585) 393-0310

How to Handle a Basement Flood

11/13/2020 (Permalink)

What to do in the Fall to Prevent Winter Water Damage

11/11/2020 (Permalink)

Winter weather can bring more issues than just slippery roads and a sidewalk to shovel. As a homeowner in Canandaigua, NY it is important to prepare your home for winter. Common causes of winter water damage include leaks, burst pipes, and drainage issues. Here are a few tips to keep in mind to help prevent these issues from occurring in the cold winter months:

  1. Clean your gutters.

I know, I know. All home owners know this is an important but tedious task. When your gutters are clogged, this stops the outward flow of water that gets collected in your gutters. When water isn’t flowing out of your home, you can bet that it’s floating in. Thankfully, this is an easy issue to address.

  1. Protect your pipes from the cold.

Before the cold weather hits, we suggest insulating the pipes most susceptible to freezing. In order to properly insulate and keep cold air out, you can use heat tape to wrap around any spots that leak.

  1. Test your sump pump.

Before winter begins, check that your sump pump is still working correctly to keep your house dry from the wet season. You can do this yourself by slowly pouring a few gallons of water into the pit to assure that the pump turns on.

These are just a few tips to help you get your home ready for the winter months. If water damage does happen to you this winter, just know that SERVPRO of Victor/Canandaigua is here to help at (585) 393-0310.

Drying Hardwood Floors after Water Damage in Victor

10/8/2019 (Permalink)

SERVPRO Technicians Quickly Assess and Then Dry Out Your Home After Water Damage

Perhaps one of the most discouraging sights a Victor homeowner sees after excessive water enters living areas is damage to hardwood floors. Regardless of the source of the moisture, if enough is present, it eventually spreads across the floors of your home. Although properly installed and finished hardwood is resilient if the spill or leak is mopped up quickly, more extended exposure can swell and distort the organic fibers of the floor. We have strategies that prevent further damage and can ready the surface for restoration.

The source of water damage to your Victor hardwood floors can vary, from overflowing tubs and sinks, leaking aquariums, rain blown in an open window, plumbing fails in nearby walls or a host of other reasons. Vigilance on the part of the homeowner in cleaning up occasional spills and a call for professional help when a more significant water event occurs is critical. The faster our well-qualified water remediation crews respond, the more likely your hardwood floors recover successfully from water damage.

When we arrive, the crew chief assesses the situation, noting the ingress point of the water and the migration pattern of the moisture across the floor. SERVPRO uses sensitive moisture meters to map out the areas of damage and to establish a baseline as we determine the drying goals for the flooring. Hardwood typically lies over at least one type of subfloor which can contribute to unresolved and continuous water damage if we do not address its drying as well.

SERVPRO technicians employ extraction equipment always available on our service vehicles to remove standing water. We use pumps for water deeper than two inches, and truck-mounted wanded extractors for residual, non-absorbed moisture. After the surface is clear of water, we move to advanced technologies such as drying mats to remove the moisture saturated inside the planks and in the subfloor.

Drying mats permit multiple and customizable configurations best designed to remove the water fast in the areas targeted by our metered readings. Hoses concentrate pressurized air over panels adhered with an airtight seal on the water damaged expanses. The water from all flooring layers suctions out as the system works. SERVPRO employees train extensively on how to operate the drying mats, adjusting and adapting the configuration as the drying progresses.

Take advantage of our specialized floor drying equipment and the experience of our trained technicians at SERVPRO of Victor/Canandaigua. Avoid the necessity of replacing expensive and beautiful hardwood floors after water damage with one call to (585) 393-0310.

Detecting the Water behind the scenes

10/7/2019 (Permalink)

Moisture Meters (pictured) are used to determine the actual moisture content of various materials.

Even small water damages have the potential to cause serious structural and indoor air quality issues over time that you may not be able to even see.

The key to avoiding costly future restoration is to handle every water problem as a real threat to your property. SERVPRO® of Victor/Canandaigua has the equipment, training and experience to find and dry unseen water before secondary damages occur. The proper equipment makes a measurable difference in reducing the damage expense during a fire or water loss. When time matters, technology and equipment must be counted on to perform. SERVPRO® of Victor/Canandaigua will answer your call with fast action and a full arsenal of drying equipment. Here are a few of the tools used by your local SERVPRO® Franchise Professionals.

  • Moisture Sensors are used to detect moisture in carpets, baseboards and Moisture Meters (pictured) are used to determine the actual moisture content of various materials. The moisture tester provides accurate readings, allowing SERVPRO® Franchise Professionals to monitor the drying process.
  • Thermohygrometers measure temperature and relative humidity. When armed with this information, SERVPRO® of Victor/Canandaigua can calculate and create an environment most conclusive to drying.
  • When facing a contaminated water loss, it is not only important to dry the structure, but the structure must also be disinfected and often deodorized.
  • Ultra-Low-Volume (ULV) Foggers will atomize liquid deodorizing agents, producing a fine mist that can easily penetrate the site where odor-causing residues may accumulate. This device can also be used to inject fungicides and disinfectants into wall cavities and other hard-to-reach
  • Thermal Foggers (pictured) dispense solvent-based produces by creating a dense fog. The fog consists of tiny particles of deodorant solution that attach to and neutralize odor causing particles.

What is the bottom line? SERVPRO® of Victor/Canandaigua (585-393-0310) has the training and equipment to help make it "Like it never even happened."

The result of water damage can also cause the growth of toxic mold and mildew. If left untreated, this mold proliferation can be cause health effects. So let’s get to it.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), you should have your property dried and cleaned within 24-48 hours after the initial water onslaught. This practice will help decrease the likelihood of mold growth. Although you may be capable of starting the drying and cleaning processes, it is important to know that mold can grow in areas of the home that you can't see. Thus, simply cleaning and drying your carpet will not always be effective in preventing mold growth, especially if there is a large quantity of unwanted water. The mold can still grow in different areas of your home, including the carpet padding, underneath wallpaper, behind the drywall, along ceilings and baseboards, in voids and furniture.

As noted by the EPA, there are several health hazards that can result from exposure to mold. It is also important to note that the mold clean up process, performed by you, can lead to exposure to fungi. For this reason, professional water damage restoration technicians from SERVPRO will wear special protective gear and utilize state-of-the-art equipment for mold cleanup and the prevention of mold dispersion throughout your Saginaw home.

Hazard #2: Exposure to Sewage -

Exposure to raw sewage is dangerous because it contains parasites, viruses, and bacteria such as E. coli. The sewage can also contain pharmaceuticals, chemicals, and pesticides. The EPA has stated that contaminated water can lead to the contraction of illnesses such as tuberculosis, dysentery, hepatitis, tetanus, and cholera. Safely stay away from the hazard of sewage water--blackwater--and let the experts execute the cleanup and dry out.

Mold Restoration

7/15/2019 (Permalink)

Many types of mold exist.  And some mold is good- such as mold used in making blue cheese mold and mold used in the production of Penicillin. Not all kinds of molds cause health problems in all people. Molds produce allergens, but not all people will have the sensitivity to react to the molds. However, those allergens can trigger allergic reactions or asthma attacks in people who are allergic to mold.

For mold to grow it takes moisture and oxygen. Mold can grow on any organic substance such as wood, paper, carpet, and foods.

It is impossible to eliminate all molds and mold spores in an indoor environment; however, mold growth can be controlled simply by controlling the moisture indoors.

If mold spores land on a damp spot indoors, they may begin growing and digesting whatever they are growing on in order to survive. Over time mold can gradually destroy the things they grow on if the mold is not remediated.

Today builders are making buildings that are tightly sealed, and can lack adequate ventilation which can potentially lead to moisture buildup. Since mold requires water to grow, it is important to prevent moisture problems in buildings. Building materials, such as drywall, may not allow moisture to escape easily. Moisture problems can be a result of roof leaks, landscaping and lack of timely maintenance of moisture problems.

It is important to address any water issues whether sudden or on-going in order to eliminate or at least minimize the need for mold remediation services. SERVPRO of Victor/Canandaigua can provide free estimates for mold damaged commercial properties. Our Team has the experience, knowledge, and NYS Mold Licensing to get your affected business back in working order.

When you have a water damage, let the experts handle it!

4/29/2019 (Permalink)

At one time or another, as a homeowner or renter, we have all had a disaster.  Sometimes it’s an easy clean-up and sometimes we know that we are in over our heads.  Many times though, homeowners have a water damage and with a little elbow grease, a shop vac and some towels they try to mitigate the damage themselves.  Unfortunately, some time later they end up calling the experts for more costly repairs due to damaged materials from improperly drying their home and even mold.  Here are some facts about water damage.

  • It is 1,200 times easier to remove water than to evaporate it? That’s why proper extraction of standing water is key to the dry out of a structure.  Many times shop vacs are unable to do a sufficient job quick enough.
  • Drywall exposed to water can wick up the wall at a rate of one inch per hour for the first 24 hours. If left for a few days while you are out of town it can wick all of the way up the wall to the seam at 4 ft.
  • The insulation in your walls will wick water from the drywall as well. Without proper weep holes drilled to allow air flow you walls may seem dry, but you have insulation still festering with moisture and eventually mold.  Insulation also loses its R-Value (its ability to insulate properly) when it is wet.
  • Improperly dried drywall becomes brittle and weak causing it to break apart very easily. Interestingly it seem that drywall that is dried properly can actually become stronger which was discovered by water restoration companies that used what they call “flood rooms” for training.  Each week the rooms are flooded and used for training proper dry out techniques.  They found after about five “floods” the drywall had to be replaced because it would no longer allow water to wick up the walls.
  • Mold will start growing immediately after spores are attached to an item and it has food and moisture. It can easily grow within 24 to 48 hours and will colonize in 1-12 days.
  • Mold releases its spores when it is disturbed, so without proper removal you can spread it throughout your home trying to get rid of it.

These are just a few reasons you should entrust your water damage to the experts at SERVPRO of Victor/Canandaigua and save yourself the time, money and sanity of having to restore your home more than once despite just one single water damage.

Sensing Water in your Home that you Can't See

Even small water damages have the potential to cause serious structural and indoor  air quality  issues  over time.

The key to avoiding costly future restoration is to handle every water problem as a real threat to your property. SERVPRO of Victor/Canandaigua has the equipment, training and experience to find and dry unseen water before secondary damages occur.

Severe Flooding Tips

9/11/2018 (Permalink)

Since SERVPRO supports the American Red Cross we love sharing their tips when it comes to flooding occasions.

Check out www.redcross.org for more information!

FLOODING Heavy rains could fill rivers and streams, bringing flooding to the area. If your neighborhood is threatened with the possibility of flooding, here are some things you should do:

1. Be prepared to evacuate at a moment’s notice. When a flood or flash flood warning is issued for your area, head for higher ground and stay there.

2.Stay away from floodwaters.

3. If you come upon a flooded road while driving, turn around and go another way. If you are caught on a flooded road and waters are rising rapidly around you, get out of the car quickly and move to higher ground. Most cars can be swept away by less than two feet of moving water.

4. Keep children out of the water.

5. Be especially cautious at night when it is harder to recognize flood danger.

DOWNLOAD EMERGENCY People should download the free Red Cross Emergency App to receive emergency alerts and information about what to do in case of tornadoes, flooding and other disasters, as well as locations of shelters. The App also includes emergency first aid information and a Family Safe feature which allows people to instantly see if loved ones are okay. The free Emergency App is available in app stores by searching for the American Red Cross or going to redcross.org/apps.

What is the Science of Drying ?

9/12/2017 (Permalink)

What is the Science of Drying?

The knowledge  of  psychrometrics is essential to restoring a water damaged structure to its preloss condition. Psychrometrics are terms used to describe the field of engineering concerned with the determination of physical and thermodynamic properties of gas-vapor mixtures. While your initial reaction may be to grab a few towels to mop up the mess and  then place a fan or two around the damaged area, SERVPRO of N.E. Monroe County are highly trained in the science of drying. We follow strict and specific industry-approved standards to help lower the chances of any secondary damages.

If it wasn't for our knowledge and expertise, this ceiling and floor would have been lost from the damage above. We were able to make our customers disaster "Like it never even happened."
